Whale and dolphin watching
Dominica is the only country where sperm whales live all year, breeding in the deep sheltered bays of the island’s west coast. A short boat ride will bring you to where the whales are most likely to be found. Sightings are most common between November and March. Even if occasionally the whales remain elusive, you’re pretty sure to encounter other residents in the shape of spotted and spinner dolphins.

Batibou Beach, in Calabishie on the north coast, is Dominica’s best beach. It has great swimming and snorkelling as well as a beach bar. Some scenes for Pirates of the Caribbean were filmed in the area.

Just as bubbles rise up in a glass of champagne, so do bubbles of water rise from volcanic thermal springs on the ocean floor, while the reef itself dazzles with sponges, crinoids, lilies and tropical fish. This is world-class diving with a backdrop of dramatic cliffs and volcanic mountains.

Hike the Waiukubuli Trail
This is a serious long-distance hike, the longest in the Caribbean. It traverses the entire island, starting at Scotts Head on the island’s beautiful southern tip, and ending in the north in Cabrits national park. It adds up to 115 miles, split into 14 segments taking a day each, so you can pick and choose or do the whole trail over two weeks.

Several of Dominica’s top natural attractions – the mysterious Boiling Lake and Valley of Desolation, the Emerald Pool and Titou Gorge, the 200-foot Middleham Falls and the Freshwater Lake – can be found in the volcanic Morne Trois Pitons national park, a landscape of volcanoes, fumaroles, hot springs and dense forest. It’s a Unesco World Heritage Site and requires some hiking, but the rewards are great for anyone up for adventure. Go with a guide or organised tour.

What To Eat
Dominica is known as the Caribbean’s nature island for many reasons, and one of them is the healthy and delicious food that is all part of life
Green Banana & Saltfish (Fig & Saltfish)
Seasoned with peppers, garlic and onions, saltfish or codfish is served over boiled green bananas and is a delicious and filling breakfast dish.
Callaloo Soup
Made from young dasheen leaves and coconut milk, this is Dominica’s national dish. It is often served with vegetables, ochroes and ground provisions with a variety of meats to include smoked chicken, pork, salted pig tails, fish and land crabs during the Creole season in October.
Rum Punch
A stop to one of the many rum shops across Dominica is a must to experience a Dominican rum punch. Be it flavored from everything from bananas and limes to cinnamon and rosemary, soaked in bwa bandé (hard wood) rum, which is a local aphrodisiac, to the more exotic spiced rums. There is a rum that will suit every need.
Kubuli beer
It is named after Waitukubuli, the first people’s name for the island of Dominica. It’s a fine lager which goes well with local meals and provide welcome refreshment on a hot afternoon.

Currency
The East Caribbean dollar is pegged to the US dollar at around EC$2.67 to US$1. US dollars, British pounds, and EU euros are widely accepted
Electricity
230 volts, 50Hz. US appliances need voltage converters. Part of the electricity supply comes from hydropower, solar and geothermal power
Passport
A valid current passport is required for entry, along with an onward or return ticket. Only a handful of countries (e.g. Nigeria, Haiti, Dominican Republic) require visas
Tipping
In restaurants and bars, 10-15% if there’s no service charge on the bill. Hotel bellboys EC$2 per bag, maids EC$5 per night. Taxis and guides 10% for good service
Driving
Cars can be rented at the airports and in Roseau. A local driving permit is needed (EC$30). Drive on the left
Public Transport
Private taxis are available at both airports and in Roseau. Public transport is provided by private minibuses. Bus service is also available
