Overview
St Vincent is the main island, and the Grenadines are a chain of more than 30 smaller islands and cays stretching southwards towards Grenada through some of the world’s best sailing waters. There’s excellent diving and snorkelling. Kingstown is the small homely capital, and the middle of St Vincent is occupied by the active Soufrière volcano, over 4,000 feet high, which means the beaches are mostly dark volcanic sand.

The national dish
Roast breadfruit with fried jackfish. Breadfruit is a staple, introduced to St Vincent in the late 18th century. Roasted and sliced, it offsets the fried fish perfectly.
Madongo dumplings
This favourite is made from fine gluten-free flour using locally grown arrowroot. St Vincent is one of the few places growing this crop for local consumption and trade.
Fresh seafood
In a nation of 32 islands, don’t be surprised to find fresh seafood on the menu: tuna, mahi-mahi, kingfish, grouper, bonito, cooked in many different ways.
And to wash it down
St Vincent produces its own rums, mostly dark, some of them very strong. Also a very tasty rum punch, and the refreshing Hairoun beer.
