Overview
Grenada has often been called the “spice island”, because that’s what it produces. It’s the world’s second largest producer of nutmeg; cinnamon, mace, coriander, ginger and cloves are among its other products. It’s also a very beautiful island, with 45 great sandy beaches, thick forests, dramatic waterfalls, and volcanic mountains almost 3,000 feet high. It is a popular retreat for divers and sailors, hikers and birders, as well as sun-seekers.

Some must-taste Grenada specialties
Nutmeg ice cream
Nutmeg is Grenada’s biggest crop, and it gives ice cream a lovely subtlel flavour. If you doubt it, try it and see. The island’s cocoa makes great chocolate, truffles or traditional “cocoa tea”.
The national dish
Oildown is a great island favourite. It’s made with salted meat, dumplings, vegetables and coconut milk. Don’t leave without tasting it.
Pepperpot
Grenada’s version of this classic Caribbean dish uses meat mixed with peppers, garlic, onions, chives, and vegetables in a hearty stew.
Fresh seafood
Crab and lobster, flying fish and lambi (conch), are some of the favourites for Grenadian meals. Check out the Friday night fish fry in Gouyave, with its live music and festive crowds.
