Suriname is the smallest country in mainland South America, but big in Caribbean terms. Most of its people live in the capital Paramaribo or along the adjoining coastal plain; the rest of the country consists of great rivers and rainforest, savannahs and mountains. Chicken satay with fried rice
Chicken or beef, marinaded in a warm spice mix, and eaten as an appetiser or snack, or with a nasi goreng or bami dish.
Bakabana
A dessert made from (very) ripe plantains, battered and deep-fried, and served with a peanut sauce or dip.
Nasi goreng
Suriname’s connection with Java dates to Dutch colonial days. This Indonesian-style fried rice has a local twist, and is used to accompany meat or vegetable dishes.
Pecel
A traditional Javanese salad of mixed vegetables in a peanut sauce dressing, often served with steamed rice or rice cake.
