The Savannah
The 260-acre Queen’s Park Savannah in uptown Port of Spain is the city’s lungs, and home to sports of all kinds, joggers, coconut and food vendors. The zoo and botanical gardens are nearby.

The Asa Wright Nature Centre, north of Arima, is a magnet for all kinds of birds, animals and naturalists. It houses a rare colony of nocturnal oilbirds.

Palm-fringed Maracas is Trinidad’s most popular beach. Eating a “shark-and-bake” sandwich from the food vendors is mandatory (but make it kingfish rather than endangered shark).

On the town
Ariapita Avenue, just west of downtown, is a favourite liming area for Port of Spain, with its bars, restaurants and entertainments. It’s specially lively on Friday nights.

The annual Carnival in February/March offers mega-parties, dramatic costume parades, steelpan and soca music (all originated in Trinidad). The warm-up season starts in January.

What To Eat
Great Trini tastes you can’t ignore
Wrap roti
A thin unleavened “roti skin” is wrapped around a solid filling of curry – chicken or beef, goat or shrimp – with curried channa and vegetables. A must-eat.
Doubles
Just as popular is the Trinidadian doubles – a double bara (flat fried bread) filled with curried channa (chickpeas) with dashes of cucumber, hot pepper and sweet sauce.
Callaloo
Served as a soup or a side, callaloo is made from dasheen leaves and okra, with crab or pigtail, pumpkin, onions, culantro, spices, coconut milk, and vegetables of choice.
Pelau
Delicious browned rice, with pieces of chicken, beef or goat, mixed with pigeon peas, coconut milk, herbs and spices, and maybe vegetables.
